Smoke Detectors

Commercial & Residential Sectors

Does your premise comply with your insurance requirements and Australia's current safety standards and building codes?

If your smoke alarm does not work, then you, your family, friends and neighbours are seriously at risk. Smoke alarms are a legal requirement in all homes, as set by the National Construction Code. Smoke detectors must be hardwired in houses that have been built or renovated since 1997, as stipulated by the Australian Building Codes Board.

OUR SERVICES

Smoke alarms are the first line of defence against household fires. It’s a proven warning sign to be lifesaving – day or night. Sydney electrical Services considers fire safety incredibly seriously. We ensure your home meets specific state and national regulations. We never compromise on safety. We will check your wiring and provide high-quality smoke alarms that meet all Australian standards.

Before you have a smoke alarm installed it’s crucial you know what’s available. For example, if your device has a battery backup the battery should be replaced every 12 months. Meanwhile, the actual alarm should be replaced at least every 10 years.

There are two main smoke detectors for household use. They are:

PHOTOELECTRIC ALARMS: Contain a photocell and light beam, they essentially ‘see’ smoke, These detectors are more suitable for household installations known for slow-burning or smouldering fires. They can be hardwired and with a lithium battery backup, providing additional safety even during a power outage.

IONISATION SMOKE DETECTORS: Contain a very small amount of radioactive material, they can essentially ‘smell’ the carbon particles emitted by a fire, these detectors are suitable for fast-burning fires, that don’t emit large amounts of visible smoke, Also known as clean-burning, which is not so common in households due to the large quantities of various products within.

HEAT DETECTORS

Are also known as thermal detectors. They monitor the temperature of the area and go into alarm when the temperature goes above its set point value. These detectors are perfect for locations near the kitchen or fireplace, as they will not provide nuisance alarms from small amounts of smoke or the use of ovens, grillers or that child that cooks burnt toast.

COMPLIANCE BRINGS SECURITY & PEACE OF MIND

While most Australian states and territories have similar guidelines, there are some slight differences in smoke alarm legislation. It can get confusing at times. Recommendations include an alarm on each floor of a house, and in some cases in each bedroom! Understanding your obligations for your type of dwelling is essential.

Meanwhile, the following is a brief outline of what you should adhere to:

ACT

Homes built or renovated since 1997 must have at least one hardwired alarm. Photoelectric preferred.

NSW

At least one alarm is required per house or floor level. Mains powered and interconnected recommended.

We understand the requirements of the NCC and will install your detectors in the correct location as required to ensure the quick operation of your smoke detector is achieved.

When you call Sydney Electrical Services, we will make sure your home is safe and sound.

Peace of mind at last! We recently finished our covid renovations and were not sure if we needed additional smoke alarms. SES came to and not only gave us advice on what we needed but also where to find the supporting documentation. Talk about going into detail lol, it was worth the fuss.
